NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team takes on preseason CAA favorite Delaware on Sunday in a battle of the two teams with the best records in the league at 2 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
BATTLE AT THE TOP
Sunday’s match-up features a battle of the two teams with the top records in the league with ODU at 11-3 overall and 2-0 in league play while Delaware comes in at 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.
Against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association, ODU has a record of 265-36 (.880).
A SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Old Dominion University will recognize local and national celebrity Charles the Monarch this Sunday at the Ted.
Charles will pose for pictures in the lobby of the Ted with fans from 1-2 p.m. and then will be recognized at halftime of Old Dominion’s CAA match-up with the Blue Hens. Read the full story here.
LAST TIME OUT
ODU outlasted Towson on Thursday in their home CAA opener with a 65-55 victory. After a slow start by both teams offensively in the first half, ODU was able to find their stride in the second half by shooting 44.9 percent (22-49) from the field while converting on 17 of their 21 free throws (81 percent) in the game to match their season win total from a year ago.
Shae Kelley, who battled foul trouble all evening, scored in double figures for the ninth time in 14 games this season and led Old Dominion with 14 points, six assists, four assists, four steals and a block while freshman Galaisha Goodhope warmed up in the second half for the second consecutive game with 11 of her 12 points after halftime in addition to four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Both squads started cold from the field as ODU was able to take a 27-22 lead into halftime spurred on by junior Stephanie Gardner who scored a career-high 11 points, all in the first half, while draining three field goals from behind the arc. Sophomore Tiffany Minor earned her first career start in 46 games played at ODU and added six points, four rebounds, two steals and a new career-high three assists.
GOODHOPE NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Galaisha Goodhope was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 7 after the freshman averaged 14.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in 20 minutes per contest off the bench as she collected three assists, two steals and shot .429 (9-for-21) from the field against Pittsburgh and Georgia State. In addition, she shot .714 (10-for-14) from the free throw line for the week.
Goodhope (set a career-high with 21 points on Sunday, 19 of which came in the second half as she helped spur the Lady Monarchs on a 42-16 run to end the game after they trailed Georgia State by 20 points with 13:21 in the second half.
In that 72-66 comeback win for Old Dominion, Goodhope was 6-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line in just 18 minutes of action while grabbing five rebounds, a steal and registering an assist.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
Out of 343 teams, ODU ranks in the top 50 nationally in the following categories: #21 in Turnover Margin (5.86), #30 in FG % Defense (.344), #39 in Scoring Defense (54.5 ppg), #40 in Assists Per Game (15.7), #41 in 3-PT FG% Defense (26.1), #45 in Steal Per Game (11.5) and #46 in Scoring Margin (12.1).
The Lady Monarchs have forced 331 turnovers in 14 games this year (23.6 per game).
The Lady Monarchs are ranked atop the CAA in the following categories per game entering league play: Assists (15.7) and Turnover Margin (+5.86) while ranking second in Scoring Offense (66.6), Scoring Margin (+12.1), Blocked Shots (4.4) and Assist/Turnover Ratio (0.9).
Sunday’s meeting will be the 24th meeting all-time between Old Dominion and Delaware. The teams first meet in 2002 with ODU holding a 17-6 advantage in the all-time series. UD has won three in a row in the series with ODU’s last win coming Feb. 27, 2011, 70-61, in Norfolk.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HENS
The Blue Hens opened conference action on Thursday with a smothering 62-27 defeat of George Mason at home where they held the Patriots to just 16% shooting from the field . Delaware tied ODU for the best record in non-conference action at 9-3 capped by a thrilling 60-59 overtime win at St. John’s on Jan. 2.
Unanimous preseason All-American and preseason CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne has returned to action after missing action early on in the year. The senior is averaging 22.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in seven games. Senior Lauren Carra has added 12.0 points per game and 30 assists.
Head Coach Tina Martin is in her 17th season at Delaware. The Blue Hens returns all five of their starters from a year ago including All-American Elena Delle Donne who has scored over 900 points in her collegiate career.
In a vote of the league’s coaches, Delaware was picked to finish first in the league for the second consecutive season. The Blue Hens finished 31-2 overall last season and a perfect 18-0 in the CAA.
ATOP THE CAA IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Old Dominion finished tied for the best non-conference record in the league at 9-3 along with Delaware.
Both the nine non-conference wins and the 9-3 start are bests for ODU since the 2007- 08 season when they went to the Sweet 16 with a record of 31-5.
ODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school's first ever women's sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women's basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.

The Karen Barefoot Coach's Shows continue to pack the house at YNot Pizza in the Village behind the Ted. Joined by host Doug Ripley, Barefoot reviews the previous week's game and gives insight into the upcoming Lady Monarch matchups all season long. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 15th at 6 p.m.
LADY MONARCHS INK TWO
Coach Barefoot announced the addition of Odegua Oigbokie and Destinee Young who signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs next fall on Nov. 14.
Oigbokie is a highly touted forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., while Young is a power forward out of Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffmann Estates, Ill.
Oigbokie, who is 6-foot-1, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a junior and has been named all-district and all-region for Ridgeway the past two seasons. Young, who is also 6-foot-1, averaged 15.4 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at Hoffman Estates High School, where she already is the record holder for career rebounds and single-season blocks.
Out of the five recruits that second-year head coach Karen Barefoot has landed at ODU, four have been rated as three stars or better by ESPN. The other three were local freshmen guards Galaisha Goodhope out of Norfolk and LaQuanda Younger of Newport News and forward Chelisa Painter from Chesapeake who is sitting out this season after transferring from George Washington.

Transferring in are forward Shae Kelley and Miami (FL) transfer guard Stephanie Gardner. The incoming class is ranked the best in the CAA and No. 42 in the country overall.
