NORFOLK, Va. – Sara Jones, a volunteer assistant to Old Dominion University head women’s basketball coach Karen Barefoot, passed away Friday morning after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Jones served as Barefoot’s volunteer assistant the past two seasons and was an incredible motivator for the Lady Monarch team.

“Sara was the most dynamic and courageous person I've ever known,” said Barefoot. “The impact she's had on this community and our team will never be forgotten.  Her legacy will carry on and I'm just honored to have been a part of her journey.”

Jones, 40, fought breast cancer the last 12 years of her life.  While memorial services have not been set, the Lady Monarchs will celebrate Sara’s life and breast cancer survivors on Sunday at the 11th annual Hoops for the Cure game at 2 p.m. vs. Northeastern at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. For more information on the game, please contact the box office at the Constant Center at 683-4444 or order tickets online at www.coxtix.com.
