2012-13 All-CAA Teams
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – Five members of the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team were named to the 2012-13 Colonial Athletic Association’s Women’s Basketball teams, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday evening at the annual conference awards banquet.
Sophomore forward Shae Kelley was named to the All-CAA second team and to the All-Defensive team while senior guard Jackie Cook earned third team All-CAA honors. Freshman point guard Galaisha Goodhope was named to the All-Rookie team and redshirt senior forward Mairi Buchan earned All-Academic first team honors while sophomore point guard Ashley Betz-White was All-Academic honorable mention.
Kelley, the only underclassmen named to the first, second or third teams, was in the top-10 in the league in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocked shots and field goal percentage. The Denver, Colo. native had a team-high seven double-doubles and scored in double figures in 21 of ODU’s 30 games this season, including the final seven games of the regular season. The sophomore averaged 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She shot .495 from the field and had 70 steals, 58 assists and 36 blocks on the year.
Cook became the 30th player in Old Dominion history to score 1,000 points this season. The Hinckley, Ohio native led the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game and was second in rebounding at 5.1 per contest. Cook scored 20 points or more on six occasions, scored in double figures in 22 games and has tallied over 100 career three-pointers and steals.
Goodhope played in all 30 games, starting in eight of them and the final six of the regular season. The Norfolk, Va. native scored 5.6 points per game and added 59 assists and 24 steals. The freshman scored a career-high 21 points (19 in the second half) in ODU’s huge comeback win at Georgia State in their CAA opener and was named CAA Player of the Week.
Buchan was named All-Academic first team for the third consecutive year after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.93 in pre-med (biology). In February, the Stirlingshire, Scotland native earned All-Academic CoSIDA first team honors for the second straight year. Buchan is third on the team this year in scoring at 6.6 points per contest while adding 3.2 rebounds per game. She has also added 55 assists, 27 steals and 22 blocks. On Dec. 2 against Dartmouth, Buchan scored a career-high 23 points in the Lady Monarch victory.
Betz-White was a member of ODU’s Dean’s List this semester and has a cumulative GPA of 3.40 as a communications major. The sophomore point guard led the team with 64 assists and was third on the team with 41 steals while adding 5.5 points per game. The Mechanicsburg, Pa. native recorded a career-high nine assists on Jan. 31 in ODU’s win over Drexel and scored in double figures in five games.
Old Dominion (19-11) finished in fourth place in the CAA this season and added eight wins to their total from a year ago while going 9-3 in non-conference action.
Delaware senior guard/forward and all-time CAA leading scorer Elena Delle Donne earned the CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight year and third time overall. Northeastern’s Daynia La-Force was named the CAA Coach of the Year while James Madison’s Precious Hall earned CAA Rookie of the Year. Hofstra’s Candace Bond took home the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and Drexel’s Hollie Mershon was tabbed as the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award winner.
