2013 WNIT Bracket
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team will make their 20th postseason appearance in the last 22 seasons as they host Davidson in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) on Thursday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center at 7 p.m.
Thursday will mark the first meeting between Old Dominion and Davidson. Tickets for the first round game are on sale now at the ODU Box Office and online at YNotTix.com. Tickets will cost $7 and all seats will be general admission.
"I am extremely happy for our team, staff, program, institution and fans for the opportunity to play in a postseason tournament," said head coach Karen Barefoot. "Getting awarded a home game is especially gratifying. I'm glad the committee recognized this team's hard work and success throughout the season and has rewarded the team with an opportunity to compete for a championship. It's been a goal of ours all season long and we are excited to represent ODU on a national level."
The Lady Monarchs will be making their third appearance in the WNIT in the last four years. ODU advanced to the second round of the WNIT in 2010 before falling at BIG EAST foe Providence and lost at home in the first round in 2011 to Loyola Maryland.
Old Dominion (19-11) finished in fourth place in the CAA this season and added eight wins to their total from a year ago while going 9-3 in non-conference action.
Last week, sophomore forward Shae Kelley was named to the All-CAA second team and to the All-Defensive team while senior guard Jackie Cook earned third team All-CAA honors. Freshman point guard Galaisha Goodhope was named to the All-Rookie team and redshirt senior forward Mairi Buchan earned All-Academic first team honors while sophomore point guard Ashley Betz-White was All-Academic honorable mention.
Kelley averages 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest and leads the team with 70 steals, 36 blocks and seven double-doubles. Cook leads the team in scoring with 13.8 points per game and adds 5.1 rebounds per game while scoring in double figures in 22 games this season.
Davidson (21-12) earned the Southern Conference's automatic bid and will be making their second consecutive trip to the WNIT. Last season, the Wildcats lost in the first round at James Madison, 64-49. Davidson is coming off a heartbreaking loss in the SoCon championship game where they were edged by Chattanooga, 64-63. Two-time SoCon Player of the Year Sophia Aleksandravicius paces the Wildcat offense. She is averaging a double-double, pouring in a team-best 16.1 points a game (second in SoCon) and hauling in 10 rebounds (tops in SoCon), while blocking a new school-record 99 shots (ninth in the nation). The senior has collected 19 double-doubles on the year.
This year's field features five teams each from the Mid-American Conference (MAC), Conference USA and the Atlantic 10 while Drexel and James Madison joined ODU as the CAA representatives.
The winner of the Old Dominion/Davidson game will face the winner of the Charlotte/Appalachian State game in the second round in a date to be determined.
