    In a pre-game ceremony, Old Dominion University women's basketball retired former Lady Monarch Clarisse Machanguana's jersey number 33.
    NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 17) -- Paula Moore's jumper with five seconds left lifted Syracuse University to a 85-84 double-overtime victory over 18th ranked Old Dominion University Friday night. Syracuse is now 1-0, Old Dominion drops to 0-2. The loss in the fieldhouse was the first since Tennessee defeated the Lady Monarchs in the 1998-99 season. This was also ODU's first overtime game since beating Stanford in the 1997 NCAA semi-finals, and the first multi-overtime game since beating George Mason in Fairfax in 1994.

    Hamchetou Maiga (Bamakok, Maili) led the Lady Monarchs with 24 points. Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, Va.) added 16 points and Tiffany Thompson (Clinton, Md.) scored 13. Syracuse was led by Beth Record and Leaf Newman with 24 points each. Record also hauled in a game high ten rebounds..

    Syracuse shot .444 (36-81) from the field, while Old Dominion was .391 (27-69). Both teams committed 15 turnovers and ODU outrebounded Syracuse, 48-45.

    The Lady Monarchs return to action on Nov. 25 when they travel to Chapel Hill, NC to play UNC.
