Gwen Alexander is in her third season with the Old Dominion coaching staff. Alexander will work primarily with the Lady Monarch goalkeepers. Alexander came to Old Dominion after seven seasons as the University of Pennsylvania's goalkeeper coach. During her time with the Quakers, she helped her teams capture the Ivy League Championship in 2004, win the 2003 Philly Six Championship, and make an appearance at the 2003 ECAC Tournament. Prior to joining the Penn program, Alexander spent eight years as the head coach at the Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, where she also taught health and physical education. She has also coached the USA Futures squad since 1993. Before taking over the helm at Penn Charter, Alexander was the U.S. National Team goalkeeper coach from 1989-1993, with the 1993 squad qualifying for the World Cup. Alexander also served as head field hockey coach and assistant lacrosse coach at Temple University from 1979-1988, compiling a 115-51-15 record with the field hockey team and leading the Owls to the 1984 national semifinal. A member of the U.S. National Field Hockey Team from 1972-1984, Alexander participated on the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic teams, earning a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games along with current Old Dominion head coach Beth Anders and was a member of three World Cup teams. Alexander received her bachelor's degree from West Chester University in 1973.
