Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. - Junior Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) dished out two assists and sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md) netted the game-winning goal midway through the second half to give the Old Dominion field hockey team a 2-1 season opening victory over No. 11 Penn State at the Powhatan Sports Complex Friday evening.

The Lady Monarchs outshot the Nittany Lions 8-6 in the game and held a 6-2 advantage in the first half. Senior Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) tallied ODU's only first half score just over ten minutes into the game. After ODU earned a penalty corner, Ueberroth tipped in a blast from Hatch to give the Lady Monarchs the early advantage.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza, PSU's Amy Bonenberger scored off a penalty corner assisted by Christine Dudek. Bonenberger drilled a shot from near the top of the circle to tie the game entering the half.

With each teams defenses tightening up and scoring chances at a minimum, ODU took advantage of its first penalty corner of the second half. Senior Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) received the corner and slid the ball to Hatch who delivered her second assist of the game to Stream.

The Nittany Lions would garner a few late chances, but ODU's defense was able to keep them off the board and hold on for the victory. The win snaps a two-game losing streak to PSU and gives the Lady Monarchs a 14-10 all-time series advantage.

Old Dominion will continue its four-game homestand to being the 2009 season on Sunday. The Lady Monarchs welcome Villanova to the Powhatan Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. contest against the Wildcats.
