Box Score

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion Field Hockey team (1-2, 0-0 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and recorded its first win of the 2001 season with a 2-1 victory over Maryland (3-1, 0-0 ACC) on Foreman Field this afternoon. The Lady Monarchs' win ends the Terrapins' three-game winning streak and gives Maryland its first loss of the season.

Both teams were deadlocked at 0-0 following the intermission, but senior midfielder Julie Miracle (Audubon, PA) broke the stalemate at 23:50 on her lone shot of the game with a goal from the left side. Fellow classmate Crystal Carper (Fredricksburg, VA), on the assist from rookie midfielder Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland), also broke through the Terrapin defense to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-0 edge with 11:24 remaining in the game.

Maryland pulled within one with just over two minutes remaining in regulation on a Dina Rizzo goal, on a pass from ACC Player of the Week Colleen Barbieri. The Lady Monarch defense held and pushed the ball upfield to preserve the victory during the final minute of play.

The Terrapins outshot Old Dominion 16-9, while the Lady Monarchs held the advantage in penalty corners 9-7. Netminder Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) stopped a total of seven shots on net, while the Terrapin's goalkeeper, Ashley Hohnstine registered three saves.

The Lady Monarchs, defending national champions, in the midst of a four-game homestand, will host the Penn State Lady Lions on Foreman Field on Monday, September 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
