Lady Monarchs Defeat Temple In 9-0 Route

PRINCETON, NJ -- Six different Lady Monarchs scored to lift the third ranked Old Dominion field hockey team (6-2, 1-0 CAA) to a 9-0 shutout over Temple University (4-5, 0-0 A-10) this afternoon. It marked the third shutout of the season for Old Dominion and the largest offensive output on the year.
Sophomore Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) led the Lady Monarchs with eight points on the afternoon, with a three goal, two assist effort. Junior Tara Hermann (Perkasie, PA) was also a vital cog on the offensive unit with two goals and three assists.
The Lady Monarchs raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first half of play. Sophomore Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) started the game early by netting the first of Old Dominion's nine goals less than three minutes into the game. After assisting on the first Old Dominion goal, Hermann placed her first goal of the day into the Owl net just over two minutes later with Loy assisting. Rookie midfielder Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland) added her second goal of the 2001 season with an unassisted tally at 14:15 and Loy, with the assist from Hermann, registered the first of her team-leading three goals at 8:33. Less than fifteen seconds remaining until the half, Loy and Hermann teamed up yet again for the Lady Monarchs' fifth answered goal.
Old Dominion added four more goals in the second half. Freshman Melanie de Jager (Pretoria, South Africa) recorded her first collegiate goal at the 25:47 mark to open up scoring in the second stanza. Hermann, Loy, and Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) each fired off unassisted goals to close out the game.
Junior goalie Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) had a quiet day in net facing just three shots in the first half and making two saves. The Lady Monarch defense did not allow a single Temple shot on goal during the second half. Temple's April Herman and Erin Conroy combined for fifteen saves in net for the Owls.
The Lady Monarch field hockey team returns to action tomorrow when they face the fifth ranked Princeton Tigers at 1:00 p.m.
