NORFOLK, VA -- The topped ranked Old Dominion field hockey team (12-4, 3-0 CAA) downed the 17th ranked James Madison Dukes (9-7 2-1 CAA), 4-3, in an intense battle for the Colonial Athletic Association regular season crown this afternoon on Foreman Field. With the win, Old Dominion clinches Foreman Field as the host site of the 2001 CAA Field Hockey Championship to be played beginning Saturday, November 3rd.

Old Dominion raced out to a 2-0 lead nearly 11 minutes into play of the first half. The Lady Monarchs first got onto the board following a penalty corner at the 31:49 mark, where junior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA), on the set up from rookie Melanie de Jager (Pretoria, South Africa) and senior Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) gave Old Dominion the 1-0 lead. About seven minutes later at 23:56, sophomore Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) followed up a rebound along the right side of the Duke net for the second Lady Monarch goal. James Madison however broke the shutout on a penalty corner following a fast break up the right side of the field with 3:30 remaining in the half. Elize van Ballegooie reached the back of the Lady Monarch net on her shot following the assists Traci Forchetti and Carrie Phillips.

The Dukes took control of the early minutes of the second half, quickly erasing the Lady Monarch lead and charging to a 3-2 edge. Van Ballegooie netted her second goal of the afternoon, on an assist from Amanda Nichols, at 30:19 and less than two minutes later Janelle Perlis tallied a goal at point-blank range to give the Dukes the advantage early in the second stanza. After a back and fourth battle on the field, senior Lady Monarch Julie Miracle (Audubon, PA) dribbled the ball to the top of the circle and fired a hard shot past the Duke keeper to tie the game at 3-3 with 25:33. Snow capitalized yet again on another penalty corner to send home the game-winner, just over a minute later. De Jager and Yoder teamed up once again on the assists.

Lady Monarch netminder Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) stopped four James Madison shots on net, while her counterpart Kiernan Raffo made seven saves in goal for the Dukes. Old Dominion outshot James Madison 11-9 and also held the advantage in penalty corners 9-4.

The win marks the sixth straight year the Lady Monarchs have held a perfect conference record. The last Old Dominion conference loss occurred back on in 1995 with a 2-1 defeat against James Madison in the CAA Tournament.

The Old Dominion field hockey team will return to action tomorrow on Foreman Field when they host former CAA rival American at 1:00 p.m.
