NORFOLK, VA -- The defending national championship field hockey squad was ranked fourth in this week's STX/NFHAC Poll with 457 points. Maryland, who the Lady Monarchs defeated 2-1 in early September, continues to top the poll with 541 points and 17 first place votes.

Dropping a notch to fourth place, the Old Dominion field hockey team played to a 1-1 record on the week which included a 9-0 shutout over Temple and a 1-2 loss to fifth ranked Princeton on the road.

On the season, Old Dominion holds a 7-3 overall and 1-0 CAA record, having played against eight contests against team either ranked or receiving votes in this week's poll. The Lady Monarchs have posted victories over #1 Maryland (2-1), #6 Wake Forest (3-2), #8 Virginia (3-2), #17 Penn State (1-0), and Boston University (4-1), who garnered 19 points in the poll. All three Old Dominion losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 10 including #3 Michigan (0-1), #5 Princeton (1-2), and #7 Michigan State (2-3).

The Lady Monarchs are led by sophomore Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), the CAA Player of the Week, with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Eight of Loy's points were recorded against Temple this past Saturday, as she registered three goals and two assists in the victory over the Owls. The eight points collected by Loy marks the largest single-game point total by a CAA player in 2001 thus far. Also topping the stat sheet are junior Tara Hermann (Perkasie, PA) and sophomore Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA), who have each recorded four goals and an assist for nine points.

The Lady Monarch field hockey team will have a two-game road swing up in Storrs, CT facing BIG EAST powerhouse Connecticut and the America East's New Hampshire, a team which received at at-large bid to last year's NCAA Tournament. It will mark the end of Old Dominion's six-game road stand as the Lady Monarchs return to Foreman Field to host CAA rival William and Mary on Friday, October 12th at 6:00 p.m.
