Lady Monarch Road Trip To End With Games Against UConn & UNH
Oct. 4, 2001 NORFOLK, VA -- The fourth ranked Lady Monarch field hockey team (7-3, 1-0 CAA) will head up north to Storrs, Connecticut this weekend for the final two games of their six-game road trip. Old Dominion will face BIG EAST powerhouse UConn on Saturday and the America East's regular season champions, New Hampshire on Sunday. Both games will begin at 1:00 p.m.
The Huskies currently post a 5-4 overall and 1-1 BIG EAST mark after successfully fending off the Providence Friars on Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory. Zimbabwe native Lauren Henderson, with nine goals and four assists, enters the match-up as the nation's 14th leading scorer with 22 points. Joining Henderson atop the stat sheet is Australia native Amy Marland with five goals and six assists for 16 points on the year. Junior Maureen Butler will be defending the Connecticut net. In nine games she has recorded a .810 save percentage with a 1.79 goals against average.
Old Dominion holds a 21-9 all-time record against the Huskies. Last season the Huskies fell twice to the Lady Monarchs with a 6-4 loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a 5-2 defeat during the regular season.
The New Hampshire Wildcats will have one more match-up before taking on the Lady Monarchs with a Friday night contest against America East rival Northeastern. The Wildcats opened the 2001 league season with a 6-2 win over Towson, but have dropped the their last three match-ups with losses at Delaware (0-1), Hofstra (1-3), and Drexel (3-4 OT). Junior Kristen Weldon has amassed 16 points on seven goals and two assists as New Hampshire's leading scorer. Rookie Christine Buckely and sophomore Julie Munson have been splitting time in the Wildcat net. Buckely holds a .839 save percentage and a 1.59 goals against average, while Munson has recorded 36 saves with a 2.92 goals against average.
The Lady Monarchs hold a 9-1 series advantage over the America East school. Last season, Old Dominion handed the Wildcats a 5-2 loss. The Lady Monarchs have been victorious in their last six outings with New Hampshire dating back to 1986 and have outscored the Wildcats 29-5 during that span.
Old Dominion is currently led by CAA Player of the Week, Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Junior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) and sophomore Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) have each racked up nine points on four goals and an assist apiece. In net, junior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) currently ranks 14th in the NCAA with a 1.17 goals against average along with nearly an .800 save percentage mark.
Following this weekend's road swing, the Lady Monarchs will return home to Foreman Field to face conference rival William and Mary on Friday, October 12th. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
