Field Hockey Moves Up a Notch To Number Three
Oct. 9, 2001 NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team, the defending national champions, was ranked third in the latest STX/NFCHA Coaches Poll released this week. The Lady Monarchs rise a notch from last week's fourth place ranking. The Lady Monarchs, 9-3, 1-0 CAA, are winners of their last two straight contests having recorded back-to-back shutouts last weekend. Against the defending BIG EAST champions, the Connecticut Huskies, Old Dominion walked away with a 3-0 victory allowing just one Huskie shot on net all day. Against the American East regular season champions, the New Hampshire Wildcats, the Lady Monarchs used five different goal scorers for an 8-0 blanking. On the season, junior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) leads all Lady Monarchs with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Right behind Herrmann on the stat sheet is senior Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) with 13 points (six goals, one assists) along with Julie Miracle (Audubon, PA) (six goals) and sophomore Angie Loy (Loysville, PA ) (five goals, two assists) with 12 points apiece. In goal, junior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) watched her goal against average sink below 1.00 following this weekend's game. The junior netminder currently boasts a 0.98 GAA along with a .803 save percentage. Two opponents await the Lady Monarchs on this week's schedule. The William and Mary Tribe, ranked 11th in this week's poll, will come to Foreman Field for a conference showdown on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. Old Dominion will then travel for their second match-up of the season against top ranked Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
