Lady Monarch Field Hockey Ranked #1
Oct. 16, 2001 NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion field hockey team, the defending NCAA champions, moved atop the STX/NFHCA Coaches' Poll this week following shutout victories over nationally ranked William and Mary (2-0) and Maryland (1-0). The Lady Monarchs, who rose two places in this week's poll, are currently 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Old Dominion is led by junior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) with 18 points on eight goals and two assists, ranking fourth among all CAA members. Also leading the way for the Lady Monarchs are senior Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) and sophomore CAA Player of the Week Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), each with six goals and two assists for 14 points. In goal, junior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) continues her role as one of the top netminders in the country posting a 0.84 goals against average and.818 save percentage along with seven shutouts. The Lady Monarchs have faced nine opponents ranked in the top 20 of this week's poll registering a 6-3 record. All three of the Old Dominion losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 10 (Michigan, Michigan State, & Princeton). Two of the Lady Monarchs' three opponents this week received top 20 rankings as well. Old Dominion will face North Carolina on Wednesday, October 17th at 1:00 p.m. on the final road trip of the 2001 regular season. The Tar Heels, ranked fifth according to this week's poll, and Lady Monarchs will meet in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship game. Also on tap this week are #17 James Madison on Saturday, October 20th and former CAA rival American on Sunday, October 21st. Both games will be played on Foreman Field at 1:00 p.m.
