Old Dominion's Yoder Headlines 2001 All-CAA Field Hockey Team
Nov. 3, 2001 NORFOLK, VA - Old Dominion senior back Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), whose outstanding play on both the offensive and defensive end helped lead the Lady Monarchs to a 15-4 record and the top spot in the latest national field hockey poll, was selected as the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Player of the Year in voting by the league's head coaches. The award was presented Friday night in Norfolk on the eve of the 2001 CAA Field Hockey Championship.
Yoder also shared CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors with James Madison junior Elize van Ballegooie (Zwolle, The Netherlands/Thorbecke). Earning CAA Rookie of the Year accolades was Old Dominion freshman forward Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland/Hervorond Lyceum), while CAA Coach of the Year honors went to William and Mary's Peel Hawthorne.
Yoder, who was a first-team All-American and a first-team Academic All-American in 2000, leads the CAA in scoring this season with 33 points. She also tops the league with 11 assists and her 11 goals rank sixth in the conference. Yoder has excelled defensively as well, playing a key role in ODU recording eight shutouts. She earned CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2000 and was a first-team all-conference selection.
Much like Yoder, van Ballegooie was also a standout both offensively and defensively for James Madison this season. Playing in the midfield and backfield, she ranks ninth in the CAA with 19 points and is also ninth in the league with eight goals. van Ballegooie is also considered the top defender for a Dukes' squad that registered four shutouts this season.
After bouncing back from an early season injury, Bant earned a spot in ODU's starting lineup and made an immediate impact. She tallied five goals and three assists in 17 games, ranking seventh on the team in points (13).
Hawthorne guided William and Mary to its most victories since 1990 this season. The Tribe enters Saturday's CAA field hockey championship with a 14-4 overall record and is ranked 11th nationally in the latest STX/NFHCA poll. This is the second time Hawthorne has earned CAA Coach of the Year honors, having also won the award in 1995.
The conference also announced the All-CAA field hockey first and second teams Friday night. Joining Yoder on the first team from Old Dominion were junior midfielder Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual), junior midfielder Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), sophomore back Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa./West Perry) and junior goalkeeper Marybeth Freeman (Holland, Pa./Council Rock). Named to the first team from William and Mary were senior forward Katie Silverthorne (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), senior midfielder Jess Jaio (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), senior back Robin Glasco (Richmond, Va./James River) and sophomore goalkeeper Claire Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox). Making the first team from James Madison were van Ballegooie and senior forward Traci Forchetti (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock), while Virginia Commonwealth was represented by junior forward Tavris Parker (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes).
