NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University field hockey head coach Beth Anders was one of four current and formers of the ODU community honored at a "Title IX Trailblazers" ceremony earlier this month.

A law passed in 1972, Title IX states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

The following ODU Title IX trailblazers were honored: Beth Anders, longtime field hockey coach; Julie Dodd, recently retired director of the Women's Center; Janis Sanchez-Hucles, professor emerita of psychology and former university faculty representative to the NCAA; and Linda Vahala, associate dean of the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology.

The awards ceremony, held at the Student Recreation Center, was open to the campus community. The free program also included games and prizes.
