NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion field hockey head coach, Beth Anders, was named the 2001 Dita/NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year. Anders is one of five regional coaches of the year honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and becomes eligible for the Division I National Coach of the Year, which will be announced at the NFHCA Awards Luncheon to be held on January 12, 2002 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Anders led her team to an 18-5 overall and 3-0 CAA mark, including the team's 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Monarchs finished their season ranked second in the STX/NFHCA poll and received the number one seed in the 16 team field of the 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. During the season, Anders' team recorded 10 shutouts, defeated 10 ranked opponents, and captured their sixth consecutive CAA Title.

Anders recorded a huge milestone in 2001, becoming the first NCAA Division I field hockey coach to amass 400 career victories. Anders recorded the milestone on Oct. 12 with a 2-0 victory over conference rival William and Mary. To date, Anders has compiled a 407-60-7 overall record in 20 years at the helm of the Old Dominion program, making her one of the winningest field hockey coaches in NCAA history.

Her players have gone on to receive numerous accolades this season including two STX/NFHCA All-Americans - First Team, one STX/NFHCA All-American - Third Team, three All-South Regional All-Americans, three All-South Regional All-Americans - Second Team, Five All-CAA Tournament members, the CAA Tournament MVP, the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, the CAA Rookie of the Year, and the CAA Player of the Year.

Other winners of Regional Coach of the Year include Missy Meharg (Maryland), Kathleen Parker (Syracuse), Cheryl Murtagh (Northeastern), and Shelly Morris (Ohio University).
