Lady Monarchs Third In Rain Shortened ECU Lady Pirate Tournament
Oct. 9, 2012
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Final round action of the 2012 ECU Lady Pirate Intercollegiate has been cancelled due to unplayable conditions Tuesday morning. The ODU Lady Monarchs finished in third place six strokes behind Maryland and UNC Wilmington, while junior Elizabeth Haycock (Birmingham, England) tied for fourth and earned All-Tournament honors. The two-day, 54-hole event, which was being played at the par-72, 6,004-yard Greenville Country Club, was reduced to an 18-hole tournament after torrential rain Monday afternoon that caused the cancellation of the final 36-holes. With the rain-shortened event, Maryland claims the 2012 team title for the third consecutive year with a 7-over par 295. The Terrapins and UNC Wilmington were tied after 18 holes, but due to the fifth player tie breaker rule, Jessica Gregory's 11-over 83 won out for Maryland over Danielle Lamy's 16-over 88. Old Dominion (301) finished third, followed by Elon (302), while No. 33 Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss finished in a tie for fifth at 303. Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy claimed medalist honors with a 4-under 68 finishing two strokes ahead of Boston College's Cristina McQuiston (70) and three strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington's Lori Beth Adams (71). ODU's Elizabeth Haycock is one of eight golfers finished tied for fourth at even par and were named to the all-tournament squad (top five finishers including ties). Senior, and three-time All-Conference selection Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI. tied for 15th with a 74, followed by junior Kimberley Bradbury (DerbyShire, England), 33rd with a 77.
The 81st ranked Lady Monarchs return to action Oct.12, 13 and 14 at the Xavier Invitational in Daytona Beach, FL.
