Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Last year's leader in points and goals per game picked up right where she left off a season ago. Lady Monarch senior Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) scored seven goals and added two assists to lift the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team to a season opening 15-8 win over American University Saturday at Reeves Field.

The Eagles and Lady Monarchs traded goals in the opening minutes as the score was knotted at two a piece at the 24:30 mark of the first period. However, ODU, ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll, scored the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead at halftime.

ODU opened the second stanza by scoring five of the next seven goals to take a commanding six-goal lead. AU threatened again, however, with goals by freshman Caitlin Gorman (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) and senior Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield), but the Lady Monarchs regained control by scoring the game's next two goals.

In addition to Wosczyna, the Lady Monarch's junior attacker Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) scored three goals and added two assists. Lady Monarch goaltender Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made nine saves for the win.

Senior midfielder Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY)captured a team-high five groundballs, while freshman Katie Veneziale (Downington, PA) caused three turnovers and recorded five draws.

American was led by Nicole McCarthy, who tallied two goals and two assists. Caitlin Gorman and Nicole Bennett added two goals a piece.

The Eagles dropped to 0-2 on the season.

The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team will return to action on Saturday in their home opener at Foreman Field against UMBC at 1:00 p.m.
