NORFOLK, VA-- Senior Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) and junior Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, MD) scored three goals apiece as the ODU Lady Monarchs earned an 11-7 victory over the Retrievers of UMBC on Saturday at Foreman Field. The Lady Monarchs are now 2-0 on the year, while UMBC falls to 3-3. The game was Old Dominion's home opener.

Jacobs also added two assists to complement her three goals. Junior Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, MD) scored two goals, as did freshman Jessica Noone (Manassas, VA). Sophomore Kelly Kimener (Oakton, VA) also contributed a goal for the Lady Monarchs.

UMBC was led by Kelly Fiorani who tallied three goals on the afternoon. Kelly Fahey, Heather Licht, Ali Levendusky, and Meghan Keelan also found the back of the net for the Lady Retrievers.

With UMBC up 2-1 early in the first half, Shotwell would respond with a goal at the 12:45 mark to tie the ballgame, and Stanwick would score at 16:15 to give them the lead. That 3-2 score would hold into halftime as the teams headed to the locker room.

In the second session, goals by Stanwick and Jacobs gave ODU a 5-3 advantage before UMBC quickly rallied with two goals to bring the score to 5-4 with 17:51 left on the clock. Goals by Noone and Kimener would give ODU a 7-4 lead before three unanswered Lady Retriever scores would knot the game at 7-7 with 8:20 left.

Jacobs would answer the deadlock with two goals scored :25 seconds apart to give the Lady Monarchs the lead, and two more ODU scores in the final minutes brought the final score to 11-7.

In goal, senior Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) played all game and stopped six shots. Teamwise, Old Dominion took 28 shots on goal compared to UMBC's 11, while the visitors won the groundball battle 17-14. ODU narrowly won the turnover battle, 14-16.

 

 

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Wednesday as they host Richmond at 4:00 p.m.
