Women's Lacrosse Fall In CAA Championship Game
April 21, 2002
RICHMOND, VA - The Loyola Greyhounds claimed the 2002 Colonial Athletic Assocation (CAA) title with a 12-5 win over second seed Old Dominion University on a rain-soaked Cary Street Field Sunday afternoon. Tournament Most Valuable Player, Loyola's Suzanne Eyler, had three goals and two assists to lead top-seeded Loyola College at the Pioneer Spring Sports Festival. Sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Barrone also tallied three goals and two assists for Loyola, and first team All-CAA attacker Stacey Morlang added two goals and one helper. The title is the sixth in 10 CAA championship game appearances for the Greyhounds, who compete in the CAA only in men's and women's lacrosse. Loyola lost in last season's final, 6-5 to James Madison. The Greyhounds left nothing to chance in this year's contest, erupting for seven consecutive goals in the first 25 minutes to take a 7-0 lead. Six different Greyhounds scored in the burst, led by Eyler's two goals and two assists. Old Dominion finally got on the board with just over a minute remaining in the half when junior midfielder Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) found the back of the net to make it 7-1. However, Barrone answered with her second goal of the day just 17 seconds before the halftime buzzer to send Loyola to intermission with an 8-1 lead. The Greyhounds eventually built their lead to 10-1 before ODU mounted a charge. The Lady Monarchs netted four straight scores to make it 10-5, but the clock and the Greyhounds were too much to overcome. With the victory, Loyola (13-2) earns an automatic bid into the 2002 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, which begins on May 9.
Hensil finished with two goals for Old Dominion, fell to 13-5 with the
loss. Sophomore midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoniexville, PA), the CAA's leading scorer,
was held without a goal but did have two assists.
Three Lady Monarchs were named to the All-Tournament team. Seniors Kendra Finger (Boyertown, PA) and Jennifer Heister (Fayetteville, NY) joined Wosczyna on the tourney team.
