NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University lacrosse team teamed up with a local church to provide help with the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) this week.
The Lady Monarchs had each player on the team sign up for a morning session throughout the week, Jan. 31- Feb. 6th, to help with various activities. The team helped clean up bedding, mats and blankets, cleaned the floors, served breakfast, and handed out lunches to each individual on their way out the door. The shifts covered were from 5:30-6:45 each morning.
“This is the third year of our team volunteering with the NEST program,” said head coach Heather Holt. “I think the girls learn valuable life lessons interacting with the individuals that take part in NEST. They find a new appreciation for their own lives and also feel pride in giving back to the community. Many of the people that we interacted with are young people trying to get back on their feet. This experience teaches our players how to be better citizens and to be thankful for all of the opportunities in their own personal lives.”

HART partners with the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) to provide meals and shelter to homeless adults during the winter months. NEST is a coalition of churches that provides overnight shelter on a rotating basis. Transportation to the shelter is provided every evening during the winter months of November - April at 741 Monticello Avenue in Norfolk.

NEST does not provide services to Norfolk’s homeless families. Norfolk’s homeless families should contact HART for help, not NEST.
