Three Lady Monachs Named To IWLCA Academic Honor Roll
June 17, 2003 NORFOLK, VA -- Three Lady Monarch women's lacrosse student-athletes, senior midfielders Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) and Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) and junior defender Kelly Jefferys (Horseheads, NY), were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll. In order to be considered for the academic honor, student athletes must have attained a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher. Danielle Hensil, who participated in the annual North-South Senior All-Star game earlier this month, earned a 3.6 GPA in Health and Physical Education. A First Team All-CAA selection, she was the only Lady Monarch to score in all 16 games in 2003. She finished her career ranked fourth on ODU's all-time points, goals, and assists leaders list after registering 38 goals, 10 assists, and 48 points this season. During the 2003 campaign, she performed a hat-trick eight times and scored three-game winners (UMBC, George Mason, James Madison). Additionally, she was first on the team in groundballs with 44 and tied for second on the team with 15 caused turnovers. Fellow senior midfielder Marlaine Smith earned a 3.54 in recreation and leisure studies. A Second Team All-CAA Selection, Smith ranked second in the country in draw controls averaging 4.67 per game. Smith was second on the squad in ground balls with 37 and was tied along with Hensil with a team second best 15 caused turnovers. Additionally, she scored 12 goals and assisted on seven others to record 19 points in 2003. During her four-year career, Smith registered 80 career points on 62 goals and 18 assists. Kelly Jefferys, a member of the Lady Monarch defense majoring in nursing, earned a 3.54 grade point average in the classroom as well. Jefferys appeared in all 16 games in 2003, recording 16 groundballs, nine caused turnovers, and eight draw controls. Her defensive efforts helped the Lady Monarchs keep four opponents to single digits scoring, including an opponent low of five goals at Temple in late March. The Lady Monarch women's lacrosse squad finished the season 12-4 overall and reached the finals of the CAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Old Dominion concluded the year 19th in the final IWLCA Poll. 2003 IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll
