Varsity 4 Takes Home Third Place Medal at CAA Championship

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. -- Senior Laurel Bransfield (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Maeghan Pardy (Ontario, Canada) were named First Team All-CAA and the Varsity 4 boat medaled with a third place finish highlighting the Lady Monarchs' accomplishments at the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Rowing Championship on Sunday at Sandy Run Regional Park.
Old Dominion finished fifth overall with 21 points. Northeastern captured the championship with 39 points followed by Boston University in second with 34 points, Buffalo in third with 30 points, and Drexel in fourth with 22 points. Behind the Lady Monarchs, Delaware posted a sixth place finish (15 points) and host George Mason took seventh (7 points).
The Varsity 4 brought home medals for its third place finish in the most tightly contested of the three races. Only a mater of four seconds separated first through fourth place with seven teams competing. The Lady Monarchs jumped out to an early lead and it remained neck and neck between ODU, Boston University, and Buffalo as the teams approached the finish line. Buffalo captured the event title with a time of 7:47.5, just .1 second ahead second place Boston College. The Lady Monarchs clocked in with a time of 7:53.1 giving the Lady Monarchs a 10-second cushion over Northeastern for the third place medal.
The Second Varsity Eight placed sixth in the event rowing to a time of 7:26.9. Northeastern's boat collected the top spot with a time of 7:01.4, followed by Drexel in a time of 7:06.8 and Boston University in third recording a time of 7:08.6.
In the Varsity 8, Northeastern won its second straight race crossing the finish line in a time of 6:41.8. Old Dominion at times was situated in third place as the boats from Boston University, Buffalo, and Drexel each were battling the Lady Monarchs for medal position. Boston University took second (6:48.8) and Buffalo claimed third (6:51.3), while ODU finished in fourth place with a time of 6:55.1.
The Old Dominion women's rowing team has one last set of races on its schedule for the season as the Lady Monarchs compete in the Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th. It will mark the 74th Regatta and is the largest intercollegiate rowing event in North America, annually attracting more than 120 universities and colleges from all over including 3,500 athletes and 25,000 spectators.
