Lady Monarch Soccer Beats Duke, Ties Florida and North Carolina
FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Old Dominion's women's soccer team wrapped up a successful spring season with three outstanding performances at the first annual "Cup of Life" women's soccer showcase at Methodist College on April 15. The Lady Monarchs knocked off Duke, 2-0, tied the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels, 2-2, and later tied 1998 National Champion Florida, 1-1.
In the first game of the showcase, the Lady Monarchs rolled to a 2-0 victory over Duke as sophomore midfielder Anna Gruzalski (Oak Ridge, TN) scored two goals while Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) lended a pair of assists.
In the second game, Old Dominion battled North Carolina to a 2-2 tie. The Lady Monarchs took a quick 2-0 lead against the Tar Heels as sophomore forward Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) scored in the tenth and 26th minute. However, the defending champs battled back to forge a tie, knocking in a goal off a corner kick midway through the second half, before scoring on a deflected ball with just 8:46 left to play.
In the final game of the tourney, the Lady Monarchs played Florida to a 1-1 tie. The match-up pitted a former player-coach combination against one another as former Methodist head coach and current Lady Monarch skipper Joe Pereira led his Lady Monarchs against former Methodist standout player and current Florida coach Becky Burleigh.
Both teams battled furiously throughout the first 45, with Florida drawing first blood on Abby Wambach's goal with just over a minute left in the half. But in the second half, McGovern again found the back of the net, cleaning up on Florida's defensive miscues to tie the game, 1-1.
In other action on the day, Florida defeated North Carolina, 1-0, in a rematch of the 1998 National Championship game. Also, UNC downed Duke, 5-0, and Duke defeated Florida, 2-1.
