Tribe Knock Off Lady Monarchs, 2-1 in Double OT
NORFOLK, VA (September 14) -- William and Mary sophomore forward Avery Willis scored the game-winning goal with 25 second remaining in double overtime to lead the Tribe over a heartbroken Old Dominion squad, 2-1. The Lady Monarchs fall to 3-3-0, 0-1-0 in the CAA, while the Tribe improves to 4-2-0, 3-0-0 in the CAA.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, with neither team holding an advantage in shots, 6-6. However, midway through the second half, Lady Monarch midfielder Jessalyn Martin (Richmond, VA) blasted in her fourth goal of the season to put Old Dominion up, 1-0.
The teams battled furiously over the next twelve minutes before William and Mary senior Missy Wycinsky found the net for her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute. At the end of regulation, William and Mary had taken the lead in shots, 14-10.
In the first 15 minute overtime period, the game was played on both sides of the field with neither team able to muster an advantage over the other. In the final overtime period, it was much of the same.
However, with under a minute remaining, Willis received the ball at midfield, dribbled towards the goal past several defenders and launched her shot from 10 yards out at the 119:25 mark to win the game for William and Mary.
Lady Monarch goalkeeper Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) made 11 saves in the net, while William and Mary keeper Michelle Horbaly had six of her own.
Old Dominion will return to action on Friday as the team travels to Williamsburg to take on Umass in the William and Mary Women?s Tournament. The Tribe will take on San Diego State on Friday in their next matchup.
