James Madison Upends ODU 1-0 in Women's Soccer
NORFOLK, VA (October 2) - Sophomore Jamie Miller's goal in the 61st minute led James Madison over the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 1-0, tonight in CAA women's soccer action. Old Dominion drops to 5-5-0 overall, 0-3-0 in the CAA, as James Madison improves to 8-3-1 overall, 2-0-0 in the CAA.
In the scoreless first half, both teams fired off five shots but were unable to find the back of the net. It was much of the same in the early going of the second half before JMU's Beth Burgess found Miller wide open in front of the net for a 25 yard right corner blast.
The Lady Monarchs battled back, twice earning three on two break-away's and twice missing the opportunities. In the 79th minute sophomore forward Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) and sophomore forward Mel McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) led the break-away, but Henley's shot was wide right by an inch and then deflected out by a Duke defender.
The Lady Monarchs won the advantage in shots on goal, 12-10, and had 10 corners to James Madison's four. Lady Monarch keeper, Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD), recorded six saves on the night while JMU's Suzanne Wilson had five.
The hard-luck Lady Monarchs have now lost five one-goal decisions on the year. Old Dominion returns to soccer action on Friday, October 8, as they host UNC Wilmington at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium at 7:30 pm.
