Women's Soccer Loses To Richmond In CAA Semifinals
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Nov. 5) - The #7-seeded University of Richmond Spiders defeated the #6-seeded Old Dominion University Lady Monarchs 3-0, to advance to the finals of the 1999 CAA Women's Soccer Championship at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The Spiders erupted for three second half goals to set up a showdown against William & Mary in a rematch of the 1998 final. Senior forward Maya Clark (Pasadena, Cal./Westridge) got the Spiders on
the board at
59:33 when she took a through ball from CAA Defensive Player of the Year
Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax,
Va./Woodson) and beat ODU sophomore keeper Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac,
Md./Upper
Dublin All-CAA forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas
Episcopal) helped the Spiders
pad their advantage to 2-0 when she headed in a pass off a corner kick
from freshman Jenna
Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and beat Dedmond at the near
post from seven yards
out. UR sophomore forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor)
closed out the Spider
scoring with her fourth goal of the season in the 83rd minute.
A tournament scoring machine, Clark continued to find the back of the
net at the Sportsplex
with her fifth goal in five CAA Tournament matches dating back to last
season. The Spiders hope to
avenge a 1-0 setback to W&M in last year's final.
Sophomore keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill)
notched three saves in
recording her eighth shutout of the year as UR notched its 10th shutout
win of the season.
Richmond
(13-8-1) will face three-time defending CAA champion William & Mary
(17-3-0) at 1:30pm on
Sunday with the winner receiving a NCAA Tournament bid. ODU finishes
the season with at 10-9-0.
