Mary Fleet Sutton graduated from Old Dominion University in 1973 after posting one of the most illustrious swimming careers in the university's history. By the conclusion of her senior season, Mary held three state swimming records, five school records and had earned places in six national meets. She personally outscored women's teams from 36 colleges and universities in the 1970 AIAW national swimming and diving championships. Accumulating individual points to place ODU 14th out of 50 teams. Those accomplishments made her the university's first female All-American. Mary was named Old Dominion University's Most Outstanding Female Swimmer four consecutive years. Following graduation, she became coach of both the men's and women's swimming teams at the university, a position she held for the 1974-75 season.
