WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis began spring action on Saturday at the William & Mary Spring Kick-Off with several Lady Monarchs earning wins.

In singles, sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa), and newcomers Jana Kubicikova and Daniela Cohen each spilt matches in their respective singles brackets, while in doubles three teams each captured victories.

In Flight A-1 singles, No. 93 Haarhoff fell, 6-1, 7-5 to No. 5 Megan Moulton-Levy of William & Mary, but followed with a straight set, 6-4, 6-4 win over Richmond's Beatrice Grasu.

In Flight A-2, junior Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) fell in both her appearances. Luiz lost to No. 68 Kat Zoricic of William & Mary, 6-1, 6-1, and then dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Richmond's Pamela Duran.

In Flight B-1, senior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) dropped both her matches as well. Santos fell 6-0, 6-1 to William & Mary's Ragini Archarya and then 6-3, 6-0 to Richmond's Robin Carter.

In Flight B-2, Kubicikova dropped a 6-1, 6-2 appearance against the Tribe's Magdalena Bresson before rebounding with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Spiders' Ashlee Vosters. The win was Kubicikova's first as a Lady Monarch.

In Flight C-1 singles, two Lady Monarchs were in action. Junior Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) fell in a hard fought match against William & Mary's Barbara Zidek, 6-1, 6-7 (1-7), 1-0 (10-6), but the bracket saw junior Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) pick up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Richmond's Xenia Schneider.

In Flight C-2 singles, Cohen made her first appearance as a member of the ODU's women's tennis team. She fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lauren Sabacinski of William & Mary and then proceeded to take her first ODU win with a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Richmond's Jelna Zivanovic.

Flight A doubles saw the Lady Monarch duo of Charleen Haarhoff and Fernanda Luiz defeat Cette and Chen of UMBC, 8-5.

Flight B doubles had Jana Kubicikova and Larissa Santos captured an 8-3 victory over Anderson and Fonseca of UMBC.

Flight C doubles had Daniela Cohen and Barbara Costa earn an 8-6 win over UMBC's Adewumi and Carapcea.

Action continues tomorrow at the William & Mary Spring Kick-Off.
