NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team opened the 2002 dual meet season with a 5-2 loss to #33 Pennsylvania this past weekend. Both sophomore Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel) and senior Ana Radeljevic (Zagreb, Croatia) picked up wins at first and second singles for the Lady Monarchs.

Fifth ranked Cahana defeated 24th ranked Alice Pirsu, 7-6, 7-6, at first singles while her teammate 88th ranked Radeljevic picked up a 6-1, 7-6, victory over Raluca Ciulei at second singles. At third singles, UPenn's Nikki Ptak used three sets to defeat senior Mily Kannarkat (Virginia Beach, VA) (6-3, 4-6, 7-6). Junior Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) and senior Patricia Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) each recorded losses at fourth and fifth singles respectively. Sotiriu dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to 85th ranked Sanela Kunova and Shelah Chao handed Araujo a 6-1, 6-0 loss.

In doubles, the tandem of Cahana and Radeljevic lost 8-6 to Pirsu and Shwrky at first doubles, while Kannarkat and Araujo fell 8-1 to Chao and Ciulei.

The women's tennis team will return to action on Thursday, January 31st at 2:00 p.m. as they host Northern Iowa.
