ODU, VCU Post Convincing Wins in Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

RICHMOND, VA -- Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth University both rolled to victories Friday at Thalhimer Tennis Center in the quarterfinals of the 2002 CAA Women's Tennis Championship at the Pioneer Spring Sports Festival. The Lady Monarchs and the Rams advance to face each other tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Byrd Park.
ODU, the third seed, opened the event today with a convincing 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Delaware. The Lady Monarchs controlled the match throughout, beginning with the doubles matches. Nataly Cahana and Ana Radeljevic blanked Elly Giese and Martine Street at #1, 8-0, and the #3 team Patricia Araujo and Lara van Rooyen also did not lose a game, winning 8-0 over Christine Knox and Beth Principe. At #2, Mily Kannarkat and Julia Sotiriu won 8-1 over Jessica Wilkes and Anisha Talati.
Cahana defeated Giese 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles as ODU continued its roll in the singles matches. Radeljevic triumphed over Wilkes 6-1, 6-0 at #2 and at #3, van Rooyen ousted Talati by the same score.
VCU used an even more dominant performance in the second quarterfinal, dropping only four games en
route to a 6-0 win. At #1 singles, Martina Nedelkova beat Emily Weichert 6-2, 6-0, and at #4 Barbora
Zahnova defeated Sarah Dumansky 6-1, 6-0. #2 Andrea Ondrisova, #3 Silvia Urickova, and #5 Jana
Carollo did not lose a game against Lindsay Brown, Katie Long, and Stacey Pignatelli, respectively.
The Rams also swept all three doubles matches. Nedelkova and Ondrisova blanked Weichert and Brown 8-0 at #1, Urickova and Zahnova were victorious 8-1 at #2 over Pignatelli and Abby Sharp, and Cristina Gago and Carollo shutout Dumansky and Safoura Sadigh-Mostowfi 8-0.
