Women's Tennis Advances To CAA Semifinals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Old Dominion women's tennis team was among the top four seeds to pick up wins in Friday's quarterfinal action of the CAA Women's Tennis Championship at Huntington Park Tennis Center. The third-seeded Old Dominion Lady Monarchs eliminated No. 6 James Madison, 4-0, to advance to the semifinals. In other quarterfinal action fourth-seeded Georgia State held off No. 5 seeded UNC-Wilmington, 4-2. Top-seeded William & Mary downed No. 8 Towson, 4-0, while No. 2 VCU dropped No. 7 Delaware, 4-0. Old Dominion earned the doubles point as Charleen Haarhoff and Fernanda Luiz swept the Dukes' Anna Khoor and Mary Napier at number one, 8-0. Barbara Costa and Linda Garder later beat James Madison's Kelly Maxwell and Lauren Graham, 8-2 at number three. Haarhoff got the Lady Monarch's their first singles point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over JMU's Napier at the number one. Luiz beat the Dukes' Khoor, 6-2, 6-2 in the second spot, and Daniela Cohen helped ODU advance with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Graham in the number five position. In Saturday's semifinals, No. 1 William & Mary will meet fourth-seeded Georgia State while No. 2 VCU will face third-seeded Old Dominion at 10 a.m.
