Haarhoff Advances At William & Mary Invite

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A singles bracket at the William & Mary Invitational on Friday. Haarhoff picked up her first career win over a ranked opponent as she upset #38 Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech in a come from behind victory. Haarhoff fell behind 1-6 in the first set against the ranked Hokie. She then rallied to win the second set, 6-4, and then blanked Beermann in the third set, 6-0, for the win. Haarhoff was one of two unranked women's tennis student-athletes in the Flight A bracket and the only unranked player to advance. Her opponent tomorrow will be #75 Randi Schuler of Purdue. Schuler had upset #61 Katarina Zoricic of host William & Mary in her Round of 16 appearance. In other opening round action at the William & Mary Invite, junior Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) fell to Katrina Tsang of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-3, in Flight B singles. Haarhoff and Luiz were also in action in Flight A doubles. The Lady Monarch duo fell to Marianne Baker and Elenor Peters of Maryland, 8-6. Other members of the Lady Monarch women's tennis team were in action at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach. Results were unavailable at press time.
