Final Stats

NORFOLK, VA - Sophomore Lara van Rooyen (Pretoria, South Africa) and senior Patricia Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) each won singles titles at the 2001 East Coast Collegiate Championship held at Old Dominion University. Van Rooyen captured the Flight A title with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over teammate Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel), while Araujo was the winner of Flight C with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Richmond's Patty Devlin.

George Washington captured the other two singles titles as Linda First took home the crown in Flight B and Natasha Bode won the Flight D title. First defeated Old Dominion's Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) in the final for the title.

Virginia Commonwealth's team of Cristina Gago and Silvia Urickova captured the Flight A doubles title with a 8-5 win over the Lady Monarch's tandem of van Rooyen and Araujo. Gago and Urickova also defeated Old Dominion's Cahana and Sotiriu to reach the final. Flight B doubles was won by Spencer Brown and Kristen Veith of James Madison, as they took an 8-6 victory over teammates Shell Grover and Brittany Rowley.

The Lady Monarch tennis team will return to action next weekend at the ITA All-American Tournament in California.
