Charleen Haarhoff And Fernanda Luiz Take Home Doubles Title At Hampton Roads Collegiate Invite Of Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Old Dominion's sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and junior Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) teamed up to take home the Flight A doubles title at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News. Haarhoff reached the finals the Flight A singles consolation bracket. Haarhoff and Luiz started acton with an 8-3 win in the quarterfinals over Kristy Borza and Leah Friedman. In the semifinals, the Lady Monarch duo downed Ragini Acharya and Barbara Zidek of William & Mary, 8-1. They went on to capture the title with an 8-3 finals win over Rakda Ferancova and Yuri Kurashima of Temple. Haarhoff reached the finals of the Flight A consolation bracket. She opened play with an 8-6 win over Georgetown's Courtney Olsen and then went on to defeat Radka Ferncova of Temple in the quarterfinals by the same score. In the semifinals, Haarhoff blanked CAA rival Mary Napier of James Madison, 8-0, before falling in the finale in a hard fought 9-8 (4) loss to Yuri Kurashima of Temple. In other singles action, junior Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) reached the semifinals of the Flight B bracket. Costa earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Catlyn Day of Loyola before falling in the semifinals to Christine Clermont of Temple, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8). Junior Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) was also in action in consolation singles in the Flight B-2 bracket. Garder defeated Radford's Cassandra Price, 8-1, in the quarterfinals, but fell, 8-3, to Pittsburgh's Carlie Smith in the semifinals. In other doubles action, Costa and Garder fell in the Flight B doubles quarterfinals. The Lady Monarch doubles team fell, 8-6, to Delaware's Elena Berry and Alex Dragonette.
The Lady Monarchs return to action next weekend at the ITA East Regional held on the campus of Dartmouth.
