NORFOLK, VA -- Lady Monarch women's tennis team members Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) and Coralie Herrmann (Porrentruy, Switzerland) both were in action on Friday afternoon in the singles brackets of the East Coast Championship hosted by Old Dominion.

Senior Julia Sotiriu, who received a round of 32 bye, fell to Pascale Veraverbeke, 6-4, 6-2 of Campbell in her first match of the afternoon in the Flight B bracket. In the consolation round on Saturday afternoon, Sotiriu will face Hampton Roads rival Shenida Watkins of Norfolk State, who also fell to Veraverbeke with a 6-0, 6-0 loss in the opening round.

Freshman Coralie Herrmann continues in the main draw of the Flight C singles bracket on Saturday, having not lost a set in her first two matches. Herrmann opened play with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Alison Lindsey of Radford in the opening round of 32. She then reached the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 round of 16 victory against Kristin Nordstrom of CAA rival James Madison. Her quarterfinal opponent on Saturday afternoon will be Virginia's Kyle Montgomery. Montgomery cruised to the quarterfinals with wins over Uconn's April Dixon (6-1, 6-1) and Hampton's Renata Hiavova (6-3, 6-0).

Sotiriu and Herrmann will team up in the Flight C women's doubles bracket. They will open play against Radford's Christina Glas and Alison Lindsey.

In other opening day action in the women's bracket, top seeds #1 Danira Penic (Temple), #5 Barbara Zahnova (VCU), and #8 Mia Marovic (Temple) each advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Flight A singles bracket. Upsets in the Flight A bracket included round of 16 exits for second seeded Lara Ercegovic of Temple to Lori Stern of Virginia (7-6 (8), 6-0) and fourth seeded Jen Tuchband of Virginia with a loss to Staci Stevens of Miami (6-4, 6-4). Sixth seeded Vanessa Bagnato and seventh seeded Melissa Applebaum of Miami each fell in the opening round of 32 with straight set losses.
