Women's Tennis Defeated By #21 Baylor
Feb. 8, 2002 MADISON, WI -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team fell to 21st ranked Baylor, 5-2, at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships in the consolation round. Fifth ranked Nataly Cahana (Qiriat Bialik, Israel) defeated 29th ranked Katja Kovac in singles, while both Lady Monarch doubles teams emerged victorious. Cahana used a 6-1, 6-3 match at first singles to capture the win for Old Dominion. Vida Mulec, ranked 42nd, defeated 88th ranked senior Ana Radeljavic (Zagreb, Croatia), 6-1, 6-3 at second singles. Third singles participant Mily Kannarkat (Va. Beach, VA) lost to Patricia Graf in three sets (6-7, (6), 6-0, 6-1), as did teammate Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany)to Frida Borjesson at fourth singles (6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-3). Senior Patricia Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at fifth singles fell 6-1, 7-6 (3) to Daria Potapova. In doubles action, 16th ranked Cahana and Radeljavic earned a 8-5 win over Kovac and Mulec. It marked the tandem's second win at the tournament after posting a a 8-5 victory over 12th ranked Crystal Cleveland and Alison Ojeda of Tennessee in the opening round of play. Teammates Kannarkat and Sotiriu teamed for a 8-3 victory over Potapova and Graf. The Lady Monarchs continued action at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships when they take on the winner of the match-up between host school Wisconsin and Washington at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
