 Big Blue Appearances • The History of the Monarch (PDF) Old Dominion University's official mascot is Big Blue, a friendly lion who is king of the Monarchs. In 2010, Big Blue was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year after competing head to head in competition against 15 mascots from prestigious Universities. Big Blue, appears at all Football Home Games, Men's and Women's home basketball games and many other athletic and special events throughout the year. How to Request Big Blue Big Blue is available for Athletic events, University and community events, birthday events, corporate events, Bar Mitzvahs, Tailgate Engagement Announcements, and Weddings based on his schedule.
To request an appearance, please send a written request to Dawn Adams Baidoo, Spirit Coordinator, at dcadams@odu.edu. Athletic events will receive first priority for scheduling Big Blue with advanced notice. An appearance fee of $25 per hour will be charged to all University Departments, University Student Groups and Elementary School Appearances. $150/for first hour is the standard appearance fee for Birthdays, Bar Mitzvahs, Engagement announcements and Corporate events. Please contact Dawn Baidoo for Wedding fees. All fees provide scholarships for the members of the mascot team and provide transportation costs for travel. Additional donations are accepted as well. Each candidate must complete and turn in the mascot registration form and $25 application fee, tryout/liability form, and physical form which will be collected the first day of the Tryout Clinic (Saturday March 23). **Every candidate must have a physical before March 23 in order to participate during tryouts.
